Learn to crochet
Work through each tab in order. Practice every stitch on 20 chains before starting a pattern. Total reading and practice time is about 30 minutes.
Make a slip knot
Make a loop, pull a second loop of yarn through it, and tighten on the hook. Hold the hook like a pencil, with yarn over your index finger and tension from the pinky.
Tip: slow down for the first ten stitches. Even tension matters more than speed.
Chain (ch)
Yarn over the hook and pull through the loop on the hook. Repeat. Count only loops on the hook's shaft, never the one on the hook itself.
Tip: slow down for the first ten stitches. Even tension matters more than speed.
Single crochet (sc)
Insert the hook into a stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both. Short, dense and perfect for dishcloths.
Tip: slow down for the first ten stitches. Even tension matters more than speed.
Half double crochet (hdc)
Yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops), then yarn over and pull through all three. Medium height, used in the scarf pattern.
Tip: slow down for the first ten stitches. Even tension matters more than speed.
Double crochet (dc)
Yarn over, insert the hook, pull up a loop (3 loops), yarn over and pull through two, then yarn over and pull through the last two. Tall and fast, used in granny squares.
Tip: slow down for the first ten stitches. Even tension matters more than speed.
